South:
Greetings from ARTworks-
the proud host of another innovative quilt show, April-May 2013. Please share with your colleagues, because Spring is a great time to play in Beaufort SC, Queen of the Sea Islands.

Modern Quilt Exhibition @ ARTworks in Beaufort SC, April-May 2013

The Modern quilt is simple, uncomplicated and contemporary. The Beaufort Modern Quilt Guild is 24 members who strive to achieve and build on this aesthetic. They are having their first exhibition in the gallery at ARTworks in Beaufort Town Center in April and May. The gallery is free to browse Tuesdays through Saturdays and special events, including a panel discussion on Saturday, April 6 at 4pm, about Modern vs. Traditional quilts with noted sewists, and a reception on Saturday, May 4, 6-8pm, open to the public.

"We'll have about 30 pieces that show how Modern quilters work," said Rhonda Jordan, who owns Tabby Fabric & Studio, where the Beaufort Guild meets. "We've invited the Charleston and Greenville Guilds too, so the public will see a fantastic range of new designs. Modern quilters don't follow patterns so much. They embrace asymmetry and negative space, not just rigid prints and structures. Machine-sewn binding is fine. The show isn't a competition, but our way of displaying what quilting means here and now." Some quilts and related creations will be for sale. For more about the Guild, contact Jordan at 843-379-5700.

ARTworks' gallery is surrounded by artists working in their studios, a black box theater, and the BIG Story Fest from April 11 through the 14. ARTworks is the community arts center of Beaufort, the coolest arts council in the Carolinas, and applies the many creative tools of The Arts to strengthen artists, and enrich audiences, collectors, and visitors through high quality arts experiences and arts education programs 365 days a year. www.ArtWorksInBeaufort.org, 843-379-2787, @artseensc.
