Notes from the April 24, 2018 meeting

Volunteer Opportunities -
Please remember the Forsyth County Senior Services.  They have been very appreciative of everything we have donated to date, including "cents off" coupons, food and personal items, and gift cards to Target and similar stores.

The guild has fabric and batting available to make quilts for donations.  If you would like yardage, cut fabric, and/or patterns, please contact Anne Monroe.

Also, consider making pillowcases for Ryan’s Case for Smiles. (You can also donate fabric, funds, or time.)  See www.caseforsmiles.org for more information.  There is a Winston Salem chapter.  Pam Hooker is the coordinator.  You can email winstonsalemcaseforsmiles@gmail.com to find out more about the local chapter and volunteer opportunities.

Swap Project –
We are having a blind swap of pin cushions with the Roanoke MQG.  Pin cushions can be made of any technique or materials.  The only rule is that you make something you would be pleased to receive.  Please include a tag with your name and the type of filing you used. (Someone with a tree nut allergy does not need a walnut shell filled item.)

Pin cushions are due at the June meeting.  If you would like to join, send an email to abhinshaw@yahoo.com by Monday , May 7, 2018 and you will be added to the list.  If you make a pin cushion and cannot attend the June meeting, send an email to abhinshaw@yahoo.com to arrange a pick up.

Raffle Quilt –
Volunteers have taken the fabric to make the squares for our raffle quilt.  These are due in May.  There will be more volunteer opportunities for construction as things progress. The quilt will be queen sized, about 72x72.

We are asking that each member sell at least $20.00 worth of tickets for the quilt.

Future Meetings -
On May 22, 2018, we will have a “sit and sew”.  Bring your current project to work on!

Program Notes -
At our last meeting, we hosted Nicole Neblett, of Mama Love Quilts.  She discussed the elements of modern quilts and had several quilts to demonstrate each of the elements.  These included the fabrics (solids, colors, and low volume prints), symmetrical and asymmetrical styles, lack of borders or the background blending into the binding, use of negative space, and improvisation.  Her philosophy is that “quilts are meant to be lived on!”

See you all next month!
