Notes from the February 27, 2018 meeting

Volunteer Opportunities -
Please remember the Forsyth County Senior Services.  They have been very appreciative of everything we have donated to date, including "cents off" coupons, food and personal items, and gift cards to Target and similar stores.

To make a quilt for a senior, take a look at Olfa.com.  They have a very nice beginner-level, 60 x 60" quilt that would be perfect for larger (6" wide) scraps. It can be found at:   https://olfa.com/craft/brasov/

 Additionally, a May Chappell fan at QuiltCon stated that she liked the Designer Star Quilt for her community outreach quilts.  She gives these to people in drug treatment, the star being a good symbol for people trying to get well.

Good News -
It had been announced that Free Spirit, part of Coats and home to many modern fabric designers, was going to be discontinued.  Muriel Riggs reported in meeting that it had been purchased.  It is now part of the Jaftex Corporation, home to 5 other fabric companies.

The Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival had for the first time an exhibit of modern quilts.  Remember that the Forsyth Piecers want us to help them do the same at their November quilt show.  See the January meeting recap (http://triadmodernquiltguild.blogspot.com/) for more information.

If you are interested in weekly challenges, Coleen Yarnell mentioned that there is a 6 week quilting challenge at Kim Lapacek's website Persimon Dreams.  Week 5 of 6 starts this Sunday.  Check it out at:  http://www.kimlapacek.com/featured-products.html

There is a Triangle mini quilt challenge for Curated Quilts.  Minis are to be square, 10 x 10" up to 16 x 16", with triangle as the overall inspiration.  Their desired color palette are sherbet-like in lime, orange, raspberry, cherry.  Submission deadline is April , 2018.  If you would like to see the colors, please email me I will send you a photo.  (rpmorgan1@bellsouth.net)  For information on their submission guidelines, signup at:  https://curatedquilts.com/pages/submission-guidelines

Future Meetings - 
On March 27, 2018, we will host Amanda Jean Nyberg, of Crazy Mom Quilts, author of No Scrap Left Behind.  The meeting will have a $5 fee.  There will be a workshop the following day (3/28) at the South Fork Community Center, from 10 am to 4 pm.  This will be a "Spin Class" where we will learn how to put our own "spin" on other's designs.  Cost is $75 for members and $90 for non-members.  The price includes the book.  You can get more information, sign up, and pay on the blog site.  (http://triadmodernquiltguild.blogspot.com/)

Program Notes - 
Teresa Conrad, of Sewingly Yours, gave a great presentation on quilted garments.  She brought several quilted jackets that she had made over the years that show the evolution of her techniques.  She demonstrated that what looks great on a design wall may not work in a garment.  She talked about fabric selection, construction techniques, and fitting concerns.  For those interested in trying to make a quilted jacket, the pattern she recommends is the Whispering Creek Jacket by Morning Glory Designs.  The consensus of the group was that we need a future demonstration on how to make the chenille that she uses for her collars and cuffs.

This month we will be hosting Teresa Conrad, of Sewingly Yours, who will be talking about using quilting techniques in garment sewing.  Teresa has extensive experience with couture sewing so this should be an interesting presentation.

Amanda Jean Nyberg Lecture + Workshop in March

Come join us as the TMQG hosts a workshop with Amanda Jean Nyberg of Crazy Mom Quilts. We are thrilled to have Amanda! She is the Author of No Scrap Left Behind. Co-Author of Sunday Morning Quilts. Scrap hoarder/lover/user. 

Amanda Jean Nyberg will be visiting our March meeting on Tuesday, March 27. There is a $5 charge at the door to attend.

Workshop: Spin Class- Make Your Quilts Your Own

Where: Southfork Community Center

Date & Time: Wednesday March 28th: 9:30am-4:00pm

Cost: $75 Guild Members, $90 Non-Guild Members. Amanda's "No Scrap Left Behind" book included in class price.

Class Details: Exercise your creativity as you explore the variety of options that a single pattern can hold. The goal of this class is to teach you how to look at a pattern/or quilt as an inspiration, but it encourages you to put your own spin on it...to make it your own. During class, you will see several examples of how changing one element in a quilt can make a drastic difference. Topics will include color selection, proportion, scale, and working with prints versus solids. You will start a project of your choice during class based on the book "No Scrap Left Behind" (Stash Books 2017)

Volunteer Opportunities - 

Remember our community Outreach project – lap quilts for Senior Services.  We are looking for pieces sized about 40” x 60”.  Sewingly Yours will donate time on their longarm for quilting them.  Please consider making at least a top.  Volunteers can be found to assist with quilting and binding, if needed.

Quilting Community -

The Forsyth Piecers have invited us to their quilt show on November 2 and 3, 2018.  They would like us to place our work in a special exhibition of modern quilts.  These quilts would go through their registration system individually and not be charged.  They will be hung together to show examples of the Modern Quilt movement to attendees.

The Forsyth Piecers have also invited us to enter our quilts in their judged show.  Non-Forsyth Piecers will be charged $10 to enter a quilt and each quilt will receive judges’ comments.  They are holding their show at the Glade St YWCA and will have 3 university-sized gyms that they would like to fill with quilts.

On February 12, 2018, the Forsyth Piecers will be hosting Bonnie Hunter, of Quiltville, who will be speaking about her book and work, Addicted to Scraps.  Their meeting is at Parkway Presbyterian church and the fee is $5 for non-members.  Social starts at 6:30 pm and meeting starts at 7:00 pm. It is recommended that you arrive early in order to get a seat for this one because the interest from quilters across the state is huge.
