South:
Greetings from ARTworks-
the proud host of another innovative quilt show, April-May 2013. Please share with your colleagues, because Spring is a great time to play in Beaufort SC, Queen of the Sea Islands.

Modern Quilt Exhibition @ ARTworks in Beaufort SC, April-May 2013

The Modern quilt is simple, uncomplicated and contemporary. The Beaufort Modern Quilt Guild is 24 members who strive to achieve and build on this aesthetic. They are having their first exhibition in the gallery at ARTworks in Beaufort Town Center in April and May. The gallery is free to browse Tuesdays through Saturdays and special events, including a panel discussion on Saturday, April 6 at 4pm, about Modern vs. Traditional quilts with noted sewists, and a reception on Saturday, May 4, 6-8pm, open to the public.

"We'll have about 30 pieces that show how Modern quilters work," said Rhonda Jordan, who owns Tabby Fabric & Studio, where the Beaufort Guild meets. "We've invited the Charleston and Greenville Guilds too, so the public will see a fantastic range of new designs. Modern quilters don't follow patterns so much. They embrace asymmetry and negative space, not just rigid prints and structures. Machine-sewn binding is fine. The show isn't a competition, but our way of displaying what quilting means here and now." Some quilts and related creations will be for sale. For more about the Guild, contact Jordan at 843-379-5700.

ARTworks' gallery is surrounded by artists working in their studios, a black box theater, and the BIG Story Fest from April 11 through the 14. ARTworks is the community arts center of Beaufort, the coolest arts council in the Carolinas, and applies the many creative tools of The Arts to strengthen artists, and enrich audiences, collectors, and visitors through high quality arts experiences and arts education programs 365 days a year. www.ArtWorksInBeaufort.org, 843-379-2787, @artseensc.

Senior Services Quilts UPDATE!

Our charity coordinator, Kim Johnson delivered 14 quilts to Senior Services of Winston-Salem on Monday, 2/25.  They greeted her with excitement and swarmed all around wanting to look at them.  They spread them all out and were admiring everyone’s talent.  Everyone was so appreciative!  The Senior Services’ staff said they will send us pictures of everyone that would allow their picture to be taken.  The recipients are so grateful and really enjoying our efforts.
They like the small/lap size that is convenient for their clients to keep on their laps. That means quilts as small as 36” on a side up to 48” are desired. And that is great for us, since those smaller quilts are easier to make and quilt.

Look at those sweet faces! I LOVE making quilts for them!
Don’t forget our guild stash, we still have pre-cuts as well as the un-organized fabrics. This is a great place to get your quilt started, or to supplement your own fabrics.

Feel free to experiment on these quilts, try something new. Some easy, fast and fun quilts to make: Scrappy Trip Around the World (uses 2 ½” strips),  the Charm Pack section of the Moda Bake Shop, and look here for many free quilt patterns and tutorials.

Swap Mama report

We had a great Rainbow Brick swap at the February meeting!
Check out the lovely range of bricks those of us who swapped received!

Our next swap will start at the February meeting.  It is a Zakka swap!

mug rug aka pin cushion mat and pin cushion jar

What is a Zakka swap you may ask? Well the zakka design style movement started in Japan decades ago.

Journal cover
According to Rashida Coleman-Hale in her book Zakka Style the term loosely translates to mean "miscellaneous goods", "many things", or sundries".
pencil case or eyeglass case

Coleman states how "it has grown to mean a style that embodies a kind of simple charm and uniqueness-something handmade that is useful yet pleasing." (6)

Sunday afternoon sew-in

The TMQG held a sew-in this afternoon at Sewingly Yours. We had a small, yet enthusiastic and productive group, as well as a special guest.

Annette worked on a donation quilt.

Angie cut her Chicopee fabrics for a "Science Fair" quilt by Jaybird Quilts.

Colleen pieced strips for a family member.

Jen FMQed a baby quilt.

Katie basted a donation quilt. (She is really using up pieces from our guild's  stash!)

Sarah basted and FMQed a gorgeous quilt for a friend.
Lee was piecing Granny Squares, I basted a donation quilt and visited. It was a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Nancy dropped in for a visit. Her sister lives nearby, and Collen invited her to drop in. She showed a gorgeous quilt she had made. It is always so much fun to meet new friends and share our quilts. Hope she comes back soon!
